Admission Criteria

The diagnostic profile of an adolescent being admitted to the Phoenix Academy Orange County includes Substance Abuse/Dependence and co-occurring disordered clients. These co-occurring disorders may include Depression, Anxiety Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and a wide variety of Conduct Disorders.  In addition, an adolescent must meet the following criteria:

  1. is age 13 through 17, or
  2. has a history of substance abuse/dependence and/or co-occurring disorders and has failed in less intensive programs.

Candidates who are otherwise qualified may be excluded from residential treatment if it places them or other residents of the community in any danger including:

  1. persons with untreated tuberculosis;
  2. persons with non-stabilized  psychotic disorders;
  3. persons who have an extensive history of assaultive behavior including those with a  history of physical violence towards authority figures and peers;
  4. persons with a history of fire setting;
  5. persons who are actively suicidal and/or homicidal;
  6. persons who are gravely disabled;
  7. persons with an IQ below 70 (moderately mentally challenged).

Candidates who exhibit any of the above behaviors will require evaluation by a psychiatrist and/or clinical psychologist prior to any admission decision. Phoenix House may request an inpatient evaluation for candidates who have an extensive psychiatric history which includes several or conflicting diagnoses and/or has not been stabilized on psychotropic medications.

Services, benefits, and facilities will be provided to residents who are otherwise qualified without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or physical or mental handicaps.

Referrals for the program will be accepted from the Orange County Alcohol and Drug Services Department, Orange County Department of Education, Probation Department, Department of Child Welfare, Department of Children’s Mental Health, Department of Juvenile Justice, Juvenile Drug and Dependency Courts, community based organizations/practitioners, and families/guardians.

      Phoenix House operates Community Residences throughout the country for people who are struggling with substance abuse and diagnosed mental illness. Licensed by local and state agencies, our residential programs offer a structured, safe and supportive living environment where clients can receive comprehensive treatment.       Phoenix House offers emergency help, evaluation and referral services, and short-term treatment for clients who are living at home.
