How many relapses till you know the person will never be able to stay off of drugs or alcohol?

It is the rare person who decides to quit using drugs or alcohol and never uses again. Most people committed to recovery use a few times, often in the first year and then go on to have decades of recovery. Some people stay sober for 25 or 50 years. Still others never seem to be able to put together even 3 or 6 months of recovery, but they too can recover. We have seen people who relapse on a regular basis for even 3, 5 or 10 years suddenly one day “get it” and then go on to live a sober life.

We never give up on people, no matter how many times they might relapse. Addiction is a chronic disease, similar to other chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, or heart disease. We would never give up on someone with diabetes, and just as a patient with a chronic condition like asthma is supported by a lifetime of treatment and attention, we will manage and treat your loved one’s addiction to keep them on track.
