Our fearless troop agreed to lend their time, energy, and muscles to weed all the flower beds, pull out the old and untamed bushes, and knock down the existing wooden fence. Then, the rebuilding and beautification started. The Associates laid new sod in the yard, put down mulch in the flower beds, power washed the tin roof, and planted new and gorgeous flowers where weeds once were.

The clients were able to help our volunteers with the hard work and, over the course of five hours, the Academy’s landscape went from unimpressive to revived and beautiful. Both our clients as well as the Associates have since commented on the new friends they made over the shared sweat and strain of the challenging yard work. Everyone was rewarded with a picnic lunch in the newly sodded yard after the work was completed. To view more photos from the day, please check out our Facebook photo album.

Phoenix House is so grateful to the Associates Group for their dedication to serving our clients – even when it means you can expect a sore lower back the next day! Your selflessness and hard work is a great example to all of us – especially to our youngsters. Thanks again for giving the Feinberg Academy a much needed makeover.

Ms. Halliday is a Dallas legend, opening Ebby Halliday Realtors in 1945; it is now the tenth largest real estate company in the nation. At 99 years of age, Ebby still drives herself to work every day.

The luncheon took place at the beautiful Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX. Guests were treated to the music of Ed Bernet Entertainment at the commencement of the program. Tables were adorned with simple, yet stunning arrangements done by Rusty Glenn Designs, Inc. Marisa, a Phoenix House Academy graduate, shared her story of overcoming addiction and sustaining recovery. Marisa is now a college student, excelling in her field of study and grateful for the new life she now enjoys. Phoenix Houses of Texas Board Directors Jacky Spears, Mary Poss and Hill Feinberg emceed the event. A special treat was the personal message of congratulations to Ebby, courtesy of Rick Perry, Governor of the State of Texas. A highlight of the luncheon was certainly Ebby’s humor and quick wit as she accepted her award.

Phoenix House is proud to honor individuals like Ebby Halliday Acers, who have dedicated themselves to improving their communities and helping others achieve. Thank you, Ebby, for your service to Dallas and for the positive influence you have had on those who have been privileged to observe your life and career!

Academy Clients Explore Potential Career Paths

In August, the Phoenix House Dallas Associates kicked off a new Mentoring Program at the Hill A. Feinberg Academy in Dallas. Associates members Dale Scofield and Steve Wolff have enlisted the help and expertise of several local businessmen and women. These industry leaders work in fields that the clients have expressed personal interest in pursuing one day. So far, the kids have enjoyed educational life stories from the likes of a Navy seal, pharmacist, photographer, chef, electrician, among several others. The clients have shown incredible excitement and attentiveness as they listen to testimonies of how the professionals have achieved success in their individual occupations and learn the paths they took to reach their career goals. The Mentoring Program has been a wonderful success so far, and we expect the impact of this initiative to be of great and lasting significance to our clients.

These young men have taken the clients to a Dallas Stars game, Texas Rangers game, as well as an SMU basketball game.

On Sunday, October 18th, the SAE members hosted a BBQ for the Phoenix House Feinberg Academy residents. The kids enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, fun and games as they got to know the fraternity brothers. Both the SAE members, as well as the clients, thoroughly enjoyed the outing and look forward to an ongoing relationship between organizations. The evening’s main attraction was a perfectly shaped oak tree with signs placed throughout as ornaments displaying powerful words such as Hope, Resolve, Love and Friendship. Guests stood around the oak tree as Emily Rudenick, a substance abuse counselor, read her contribution to the book, a piece titled I Wear Starfish Around My Neck. Emily’s reading was compelling, honest and reiterated that recovery is about reclaiming lives. Afterwards, friends were treated to warm cider and holiday cookies before heading over to view the new wall mural. Each section of the wall was a collaborative effort headed by local artist Stephanie DeFario which helped bring to life to the academy.

Phoenix House kicked off spring with a fabulous event celebrating everything new on Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Board Director Robert Weatherly assembled a who’s who group in Dallas at Kelly and Mark Bunting’s beautiful home in Highland Park. They graciously opened their home to the 200 guests that came in support of Phoenix House. Guests enjoyed delectable hors d’oeuvres by Laura’s Event Catering and listened to tunes mixed by DJ Lucy Wrubel, but the real stars of the event were the children of Dallas, the “at risk” kids in the community who need support the most.

Donating time, raising awareness and giving back to the cause was the message being sent by Robert Weatherly and Phoenix House. Everyone was encouraged to visit – to see firsthand the successful model which has helped so many who have walked through the doors of Phoenix House in Dallas since 2002. Caren McGratty, Director of Development at Phoenix House says, “When you visit the Phoenix House Hill A. Feinberg Academy and hear the kids’ stories you learn what happens in treatment and hear the struggles and successes of these children. And you can see the impact of treatment and why helping them is a gift to the community of Dallas.”

Assisting with arrangements for the event were, Annika Cail of 521 Events, Leah McCann of Leah McCann PR, both are members of the Phoenix House Associates. The event was a huge success and the Phoenix House Associates promise more to come. For more information contact Caren McGratty at cmcgratty@phoenixhouse.org.
