IMPACT Program Names Tessa Vining As Director
NEW YORK, NY, November 16, 2005 – Tessa Vining has joined Phoenix House as director of the IMPACT program, the organization’s outpatient intervention program for adolescents and their parents.
“Tessa brings a unique mix of skills that are crucial to our efforts to increase support for IMPACT in New York City,” said John Sheehan, Director of Adolescent Programs for Phoenix House. “With broad experience in both the treatment and communications fields, she is well positioned to maintain the program’s clinical excellence while expanding the presence of IMPACT and building new partnerships with public and private schools, youth psychiatrists, and others with an interest in helping troubled teens.”
Prior to joining Phoenix House, Ms. Vining worked at the Educational Alliance, where she served as a senior clinical social worker for adults in a substance abuse outpatient program, then as Assistant Director of Project T.R.Y. (Treatment and Rehabilitation for Youth), working with adolescent substance abusers. She had previously worked with the IMPACT program while obtaining her Masters in Social Work at New York University
IMPACT – which stands for Intervention Moves Parents And Children Together – is an intensive after-school outpatient program for teens and their families. The professional staff works with teens to help them identify and confront the underlying causes of their drug abuse. During treatment, teens work to rebuild their self-esteem as well as learn how to control impulses, make positive choices, manage stress, and plan for the future. Family involvement is a key factor in the success of the program. Parents are expected to attend weekly multi-family groups and weekly parent education seminars.
Chief among Ms. Vining’s goals for the program will be to work with New York City school administrators, psychiatrists and psychologists, and alternative programs for troubled youth to demonstrate how IMPACT can supplement their own efforts or serve as a component of aftercare for more intensive, residential interventions.
Phoenix House is the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of substance abuse treatment and prevention services, currently operating nearly 100 programs in nine states. Each day nearly 6,000 adults and adolescents are treated at residential centers for adults, residential Phoenix Academies combining treatment and schooling for teenagers, outpatient, after school, and day programs.
