Phoenix House Hosts Community Fair for Harlem Teens

NEW YORK, NY, May 17, 2004 – On May 22, 2004 Phoenix House, the nation’s leading non-profit drug treatment and education organization, will co-host a Community Youth Fair at Harlem Art Park. The fair, for local kids aged 12 to 17, will combine a fun day out – carnival games, DJs, and cotton candy – with a strong drug prevention message.

Phoenix Houses’ Changing Youth Thinking (CYT) program has been helping kids stay off drugs since May, 2002. An outpatient prevention and education program based in Harlem, CYT targets adolescents ages 12 to 17 who may be at risk for marijuana, alcohol and other substance abuse. The program is designed to meet the specific needs of today’s urban youth and their families in New York City.

CYT offers individual and group counseling sessions for kids, as well as parent education sessions and home visits to help families support their children’s growth. Families can also access case management and referral services through the Harlem Community Center’s Youth Future’s Network.

"At CYT we don’t just help kids stay clean, we try to give them the tools they need to deal with every day problems," said Victor Delgado, director of Community Court Programs, Phoenix Houses of New York. "It’s not easy being a teenager, especially in a big city, but we can help."

"Through the CYT program at Phoenix House, young people and their families are encouraged to address community and family pressures that may be a factor in substance abuse," said Jack Klimp, regional director of Phoenix Houses of New York. "The goal of treatment is not only to prevent or stop substance abuse, but to strengthen families and the community as a whole."

Phoenix House is the nation’s leading provider of substance abuse treatment and prevention services operating more than 100 programs in nine states. Since 1967, Phoenix House has treated more than 100,000 substance abusers – currently caring for a population of more than 6,000 at residential centers for adults, residential Phoenix Academies combining long-term treatment and schooling for adolescents, outpatient, after school, and day programs.
