A dual-purpose celebration for Phoenix Houses of New England this summer opened a new Phoenix Academy of Springfield and honored two state leaders for their support of the treatment community: Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey and Senator Steven Tolman. By proposing and supporting vital legislation, both have shown extraordinary dedication to increasing treatment opportunities for the people of Massachusetts.
“Phoenix House is a place where young people can regain opportunities lost to drugs and alcohol,” said Lt. Governor Healey. “Whether it’s residential treatment, outpatient services, education, or prevention initiatives, Phoenix House can always be counted on to stay true to their mission of healing families, strengthening communities, and saving lives.”
The new Academy building, just steps away from the old, was recently purchased and renovated by Phoenix House to provide quality residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment for teens in western Massachusetts. The Springfield Academy is one of 11 Phoenix Academies in the U.S. Proud students conducted tours of the facility – including a new, expanded kitchen – for visiting friends and dignitaries following the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Among the guests was Diane A. Kurtz whose son went through treatment many years ago. A great friend of Phoenix House, Mrs. Kurtz was instrumental in helping start the first Academy in Massachusetts and still keeps in touch with program staff. “Phoenix House is doing a wonderful job with our children and I'm very grateful,” she said. “However, we need more beds and a continuum of service to help our young people achieve success.”
