New York Graduation – See the Video!
On October 17, 2005 Phoenix House celebrated the accomplishment of some 200 adults and teens who completed long term substance abuse treatment programs in New York City. These young men and women have been back in school or employed for at least a year – many had faced prison or life on the streets. The graduation ceremony was held at Riverside Church in Manhattan, with Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr. (pictured) as the commencement speaker. See video.

Project Backpack
Students at the Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles took part in "Project Backpack," collecting supplies for kids displaced by hurricane Katrina. They put together a total of 158 backpacks filled with crayons, coloring books, toys and games, school supplies, a stuffed animal, and a flashlight. A group of students delivered the backpacks to the Dream Center in Los Angeles where some 200 homeless families have relocated from Louisiana and Mississippi.

Teens Triumph Over Addiction
In late June, 25 young men and women graduated from the Phoenix Academy of New York and were presented with their New York City Department of Education Regents diplomas. Class representative, Jessica, spoke at the ceremony about her own struggles with drugs and alcohol, and her pride in having completed the program. “Phoenix House has made a big difference in my life, changed the way I feel about myself, and helped me set goals for the future,” she said. Jessica plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician.

Commencement ceremony for Phoenix Academy
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (pictured here with a Phoenix Academy graduate and Winnie Wechsler, director of Phoenix House in California) attended a commencement ceremony for teens graduating from the Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles. Some 250 friends and family joined in the celebrations held on August 6, 2005. When one hears the stories of what the Phoenix Academy students have overcome, "you can’t help but feel you’re with greatness,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. "The fortitude, strength, tenacity and determination to make it has to be so great."
