An Excellent Neighbor
Staff and students at the Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles were delighted but not surprised to hear that their facility manager Adrian Diaz had been selected to receive a Local Heroes award as part of Bank of America's Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI). Read More.

  Project Backpack
Students at the Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles took part in "Project Backpack," collecting supplies for kids displaced by hurricane Katrina. They put together a total of 158 backpacks filled with crayons, coloring books, toys and games, school supplies, a stuffed animal, and a flashlight. A group of students delivered the backpacks to the Dream Center in Los Angeles where some 200 homeless families have relocated from Louisiana and Mississippi.
 
 
 
 
Phoenix in the Park
California Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez joined students from the Phoenix Academy of Orange County on a hike through O’Neill Park organized by the Sierra Club. Local conservancy advocates joined the group, talking to the kids about the threat that building developments pose to virgin lands in Orange County. Congresswoman Sanchez has visited Phoenix House in the past and is a valued supporter of our programs.
 
 
 
 
 
  Conference Calls for Investment in Treatment
The shortage of substance abuse treatment for adolescents in California has reached a level of crisis, with less than 10 percent of teens receiving the help they desperately need. Read more.

First District Supervisor Charles "Chuck" Smith presented a proclamation to Phoenix House for its 25 years of community service in Orange County.
 
 
 
 

Drug-Free, Healthy Me
Phoenix House secured a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Carol M. White Physical Education Program to improve physical education programs and provide better equipment for Phoenix Academy of Los Angeles. With the support of Congressmen Brad Sherman and Howard Berman, Phoenix Academy is planning a comprehensive physical and health education program called "Drug-Free, Healthy Me."


Phoenix Academy Gets Results
The RAND Corporation, one of the nation’s most trusted research organizations, has confirmed the effectiveness of Phoenix House’s treatment for teens. A study published by RAND found that teens treated at a Phoenix Academy demonstrated substantial reductions in drug use and improvement in psychological well-being – and that the Phoenix Academy outperformed other teen programs in these areas.
